Tips for tracking down big muskies in the late fall

Cooling waters in fall trigger muskies to feed so they can bulk up for the approaching winter. For avid muskie fishermen, there may be no better time to seek a giant fish.
To be more successful, two Northwoods guides who consistently put their clients onto huge muskies encourage anglers to be stealthy and precise in their presentations. Both guides primarily rely on live-bait fishing, namely quick-strike-rigged suckers, as their method of choice.
“There’s very little boat traffic and I love the peace and quiet on the lakes. We have the opportunity to catch the biggest fish of the year,” said Rob Manthei, who guides in the Vilas/Oneida county region of northern Wisconsin.

Western Upper Peninsula group working to ‘rehab’ deer yards

An important ingredient to the often tenuous existence of the white-tailed deer in the northern part of its range is what is known as a “deer yard,” often a lowland area containing coniferous trees that provide shelter and sometimes food to wintering deer.
Deer in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, may migrate tens of miles from their summer range to such winter cover.
In recent years, deer yards have been decimated in many locations for a number of reasons.

Follow these three patterns to catch August muskies

Catching muskies in August can be difficult. Years ago anglers believed their lack of action was a result of the fish losing their teeth. We now know muskies carry a full set of dentures all season long, but they do remain a challenge to catch.
Fortunately, there are a number of patterns that can produce muskies in late summer. Here are three that should figure into your muskie plans.

Analyzing the numbers: Buck kill declines 34% over long term in 10 northern Wisconsin counties

As Wisconsin Outdoor News interviewed hunters, loggers, and business owners for the recent five-part series about the deer herd situation in northern Wisconsin, the message that came up repeatedly was that deer hunting has been especially frustrating during the last five years. So, as a series finale, WON decided to see if facts support their beliefs.
Articles in previous issues analyzed and reported deer harvest numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ online deer metrics page. Those articles looked at the last 45 deer seasons in the north, ranging from lean years starting in 1979 through the halcyon times of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and ended with what many found to be a season of disappointment in 2023.

Northern Wisconsin’s deer herd: Forest and Florence counties share disparate habitats, hunter success

A proposal that seems to be gaining momentum in Wisconsin is a return to the old deer management units system, which was in place before county-based management was instituted after Dr. James Kroll’s 2012 Deer Trustee Report.
Proponents believe the old “numbered” unit system allowed deer to be better managed according to habitat, whereas the current county system is too broad. There are perhaps no greater examples of the reasoning to return to the previous unit system than Forest and Florence counties in northeastern Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s Suick Lure Co. celebrates 85th year with new family owner

One of muskie fishing’s most iconic lure manufacturers is in its 85th year in business under the guidance of the fourth generation of its family.
Suick Lure Co., of Antigo,Wis., has announced that Michael Suick purchased the company from his father, Steve Suick. The purchase price was not disclosed.
“I’m proud to continue my family’s legacy and I am determined to pass it on to the next generation someday,” Mike Suick said. “And I hope I can keep it within the Suick family.”

Wisconsin’s northern deer herd: Wolves, coyotes blamed in Sawyer, Price counties

Sawyer and Price counties don’t form the northern border of Wisconsin like the other counties being discussed in this series, but deer hunters have also struggled there in recent seasons.
In Sawyer County, Bill Rands has created sort of a deer utopia on his land and believes he’s in a neutral position to discuss what wolves have done to the deer there. In Price County, Dave Mabie points to coyotes as the primary issue for the county’s deer herd.
