Nature Smart: A predator vs. predator encounter

An experience I had yesterday illustrated for me again that nature can never be predictable, or understandable. I am writing to you from cold, snowy Yellowstone National Park, where I am in the middle of leading two groups of photographers on a winter wildlife photography adventure.

Nature Smart: Created by woodpeckers, tree cavities hold value for multiple wildlife species

A cavity in a tree, excavated by a woodpecker seems normal enough, but when you stop to consider it, this simple cavity in a tree is remarkable. Let’s take a closer look at the humble woodpecker cavity.

Nature Smart: Why three toes? Meet the black-backed woodpecker

Winter in the northwoods is a special place and time of year. There is just something exceptional and inviting about the absolute silence, stillness, and wildness that combines to make it a great place to be alone and experience nature.
Several interesting and unique species occur in the northwoods. I’m especially intrigued by northwoods “specialists.” Recently I searched for a specialty bird, the black-backed woodpecker.

Nature Smart: A memorable experience in this year’s Christmas Bird Count

Every year, around the holidays, I participate in a long-time traditional bird count, called the Christmas Bird Count or (CBC). This is a world-wide effort by volunteers to take a day to go and count birds within a pre-defined area. I got out last month and had a memorable experience with this event, again.

Nature Smart: Meet the amazing junco

There is a small, common bird some describe as “bland” that visits your yard each winter. It is charcoal gray in color with a white belly.
The males are darker than the females. They have a small pink bill, which is really the only splash of color on this bird. They have a pair of white outer tail feathers that stand out strikingly against the dark tail but are only seen when the bird is in flight.

Nature Smart: Wild turkeys and the ‘false’ breeding season

The casual observer of nature may not notice some strange things going on in the natural world during late fall/early winter.
I scatter some whole and cracked corn occasionally on the ground to feed a local flock of Eastern wild turkeys. A small group of adult toms stops by every couple of days and a slightly larger group of females also visits.

Nature Smart: What’s the story with black-phase squirrels?

Even common critters in nature can exhibit amazing behaviors or characteristics. The Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) may be the most common yet overlooked critter in America. They are found throughout the entire eastern half of the country; a nearly identical cousin inhabits the western half.
I recently spotted an Eastern gray squirrel black morph – an uncommon critter with many cool stories to tell.

Nature Smart: The all-American bison should be celebrated

The American bison (Bison bison) strikes me as one of those animals that doesn’t get the admiration or respect that other large animals command.
The public adores brown bears, moose, and elk. Hunters prize white-tailed deer. Even black bears get a little love. Yet it seems everyone just tolerates bison, kind of like you might tolerate a strange uncle who comes to a family gathering.

Nature Smart: Prairie dog town soul

Diversity is the key to the strength and resilience of Mother Nature. Diversity in the plant world ranges from single celled plants, known as algae, to giant sequoia trees. The diversity of insects is almost too much to fathom. As for birds, more than 11,000 different species of bird flit around the world in so many vibrant colors, shapes, and sizes.
