New York DEC debuts new state lands reservation system for Long Island’s January deer hunt

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that the 2026 firearms deer season in Suffolk County will begin Sunday, Jan. 4, and continue through Jan. 31, 2026.
New for the 2026 January deer hunting season, DEC has streamlined the reservation method to hunt on state-managed lands to an online system.

George Meyer, Wisconsin conservation legend, passes away at age 78

Former DNR secretary and Wisconsin Wildlife Federation executive director George Meyer, 78, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Madison.
Meyer had been a Wisconsin conservation leader for more than 50 years. He worked as a Wisconsin DNR staff attorney from June 1972 through February 1980, then as the DNR’s Division of Enforcement Administrator from 1980 to 1993. Meyer served as the Wisconsin DNR secretary from 1993 to 2001.

Minnesota deer-poaching case from Douglas County ends with guilty plea

A poaching case from Minnesota’s Douglas County that included charges of shooting deer at night over bait, illegally taking more than the allowed one buck per year, improper registration of deer, and unlawfully using other people’s tags wrapped up this fall.
Riley McCabe, 32, of Alexandria, pleaded guilty in October to charges of possession of an untagged big-game animal and an overlimit of deer.
