New York’s statewide deer harvest up 10% as 2022 figures are released

New York’s estimated statewide deer harvest of 231,961 whitetails during the 2022-23 hunting seasons reflects a 10% increase from last year. The State Department of Environmental Conservation recently released the figures.
The 2022-23 estimated deer take included 116,425 antlered bucks and 115,536 antlerless deer. Statewide, this represents a 5% increase in the antlered buck harvest and a 15% increase in the antlerless deer harvest from last season.

The event featured a chance for new shooters to learn the basics and experienced archers an opportunity to practice their skills in an open-shoot style format. Dinner and a raffle with baskets donated by many businesses of the community were also included.

Turkey researchers asking New York hunters to donate part of their turkey legs this year

Researchers are asking that hunters who harvest a wild turkey in New York this spring submit one of their turkey legs to be analyzed as part of a study. Successful hunters should keep the tarsus of the leg, which is from the knee/elbow joint down to the foot. It is OK for hunters to remove and keep the spur.

Wyoming shed-antler hunting postponed on designated lands until May 15 to reduce stress on animals

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recently announced an emergency extended closure of the shed antler and horn hunting regulation to protect big game on winter ranges.
The emergency regulation extends the current closure until 6 a.m. May 15 on designated lands, excluding Teton County.

Public input meeting set on Visitor Use Management Project in Adirondack High Peaks And Catskills

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that Otak, Inc. is hosting and facilitating the first round of public meetings in the High Peaks and Catskills for the Visitor Use Management (VUM) project. Public and stakeholder input will play a key role in helping DEC and Otak develop appropriate management strategies for the High Peaks and Kaaterskill Clove project areas.
