Waterfowl migration report: Duck hunting slows, but crop harvest opens up field opportunities

The Minnesota DNR released the fifth edition of its 2023 waterfowl migration and hunting report on Oct. 19, noting that hunting slowed in the state over the past week.
Geese continue to increase in many parts of Minnesota.
“Duck hunting has been slow over the past week,” the report said. “Some migrant birds have moved into the state but scouting is paramount for hunter success.”

‘Pebbles,’ a well-known American bison at Illinois’ Buffalo State Park, dies of natural causes

An 18-year resident of Illinois’ Buffalo Rock State Park was lost this month when Pebbles, an American bison, died Oct. 3.
According to DNR, Pebbles was the oldest American bison at the park and died of natural causes. She had been under veterinary care. Buffalo Rock State Park – located at 1300 N. 27th Road in Ottawa – has two other American bison on site. Pebbles is survived by her 3-year-old calf, Hope, and another named, Cocoa.

Chicago native, Chance Webb, named southern Illinois rep for PF/QF

Chance Webb has been named regional representative for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever in southern Illinois.
A Chicago native, Webb experienced a unique entry to the world of upland hunting and conservation as an “adult-onset” hunter. Raised in the suburbs, he had no prior exposure to the hunting and conservation lifestyle until meeting and marrying his significant other who grew up on a western Iowa farm.
