Deer not only culprits raiding farmers’ crops

During three months last summer and early fall, I had placed a trail camera along the edge of a corn field at one of my hunting spots. The camera was fastened to a mid-sized beech tree, which was at the edge of heavy woods and thick brush adjacent to the corn field.
As with the placement of trail cams by most other hunters, I wanted to get some idea of the deer numbers — and possible mature bucks — that were living in this area. In the overall collection of photos, I was surprised at all the different forms of wildlife that were raiding the corn crop growing there.

Pennsylvania’s Big Bass Program may be a misguided endeavor

Ever since the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission introduced the Big Bass Program on certain lakes across the state, I’ve been a big fan. Perhaps watching big largemouths being lifted from storied waters by some well-known anglers on TV had piqued my own desire for fighting a heavy fish with a wide gaping mouth.

Hunter’s summer in Pennsylvania: Here are ways to pass the time

For outdoor sportsmen, summer is in between hunting seasons, but it still should be an active time.
Mid-July is staging on the calendar, and in Pennsylvania that means high outside heat and its companion of soaring humidity. This month may also provide some periods of dryness, plus some spectacular thunderstorms. Ah, those lazy days of summer when time can sure move slowly.

Acquiring antlerless hunting license in Pennsylvania turned out to be slow and difficult

The morning of June 26, I signed on to my Hunt Pa. internet account at 7:52 a.m. There was a nice countdown to the 8 o’clock start, when we hunters could begin the process of typing personal information, selecting various hunting licenses — plus our antlerless wildlife management unit destination.
We expected to be able to submit the license choices, pay for the complete transaction and then print the whole works.

Return to northern Pennsylvania for turkeys different in final week

Hunting gobblers during the last full week of the season meant a lot less noise and bird sightings than the first week.
Not one to give up easily, I reloaded my turkey hunting gear — and fishing hardware — last weekend and once again headed to Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon area in an attempt to harvest a breeding-minded gobbler.

Wind, snow, sleet or rain don’t stop turkeys from being turkeys

When mating season arrives for wild turkeys, harsh weather does little to halt their spring breeding activity.
When spring gobbler season opened in Pennsylvania April 29, I found myself huddled against a medium-sized white pine tree as the darkness of night was beginning to fade in the eastern sky. Rain was falling, and the gathered moisture on pine needles dropped heavily on my hat.

Consider serious preparations for spring gobbler season in Pennsylvania

Like any type of hunting, be as knowledgeable as possible about the quarry, and prepared fully.
With spring gobbler season’s full opening only a couple of days away here in Pennsylvania, one might want to consider reading this list of basic preparations and hunting fundamentals before going afield.

Try big Pennsylvania trout streams for that western feel

Pennsylvania’s large trout streams offer plenty of seclusion — and trout — to make one feel he or her is on a Rocky Mountain trout stream.
I spent most of this past week walking the banks of Pennsylvania’s Big Pine Creek while casting an assortment of nymphs and Wooly Buggers in the hope of hooking up with one of the many trout that swim this huge flow of water.
