I was pleasantly surprised when I had a news release come across my desk recently announcing that the National Deer Association (NDA) is feting our very own deer biologist Mike Tonkovich.
Well, that is the retired Mike Tonkovich, who left the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife last May after 31 years at the helm of the agency’s deer management efforts.
You know Tom Cross is a true outdoorsman when you learn that his mom and dad bought him a 12-foot jon boat for his high school graduation.
That was in 1972 and at the time Cross was living in Amelia in Clermont County and driving a red Ford Falcon. Things in Amelia were much different then than they are today. Clermont County was still largely rural, and Cross took advantage of his outdoor opportunities at most every turn.

Just what’s in the water in Coshocton County?
According to the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s final deer season harvest statistics, that north-central Ohio county led the state for the 24th consecutive year. Deer hunters there killed 8,527 animals during the just concluded 2025-26 season. It’s been the Super Bowl for Ohio ice anglers on north central Ohio’s Indian Lake this winter.

The lake is owned by the city of Alliance, the Stark County Parks District manages the resources around the lake, and the fishery is managed by the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

What I’m talking about is the continued fracking of state lands in Ohio. The most recent decision by the state’s Oil and Gas Land Management Commission will permit the drilling of an additional 6,600 acres at Jockey Hollow and Egypt Valley wildlife areas.

Inland lakes around Ohio were making ice in mid-January just before a major snowstorm on the weekend of Jan. 24-25 dumped as much as 15 inches of snow in some parts of Ohio.
