A couple committed to conservation: Dale and Janie Sunderlin are Ohio Outdoor News’ People of the Year

The 2023 Ohio Outdoor News Person of the Year is actually two people this year. So, it’s the 2023 People of the Year.
The reason the annual award goes to two people this year is that Dale and Janie Sunderlin are a hunter education team, toiling in the shadows for the past 23 years to educate Ohio’s hunting public.

Borrowed rifle put to good use on 200-inch buck in Ohio

In a nod to the increasing popularity of straight-walled cartridges for rifles in Ohio deer hunting, Andrew Mitchem put one to good use this past December.
On Dec. 1, 2022, Mitchem, of North Lewisburg in Champaign County, borrowed his buddy’s daughter’s rifle to kill a buck that is certainly headed for the Buckeye Big Buck Club and Boone and Crockett lore.

Lake Erie fish cleaning stations in Ohio nearly complete

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife is in the process of building the three new facilities on the lake right now and the agency says they’ll be available for angler use by mid-April to early May, depending on weather conditions, and they should be available for use through mid- to late October. These facilities contain plumbing, and thus cannot be used during the colder winter months, according to the DOW.

Ohio Insider: Success of blue catfish is a management success story from Central Ohio’s Hoover Reservoir

If you want evidence of a fish management success story you don’t have to look any further than Central Ohio’s Hoover Reservoir.
The four-fish daily split bag limit for catfish has been dropped at Hoover. That slot limit was intended to protect fish between 18 and 28 inches. The Division of Wildlife has also reduced the stocking rate for blues at Hoover, given that the population is doing so well.

Ohio DNR biologist encouraged with recent poult success heading into turkey season

New this year, hunters may only harvest one male turkey per spring season, per hunter. That’s a change from the previous bag limit of two birds per hunter, per season. This change was proposed by the ODNR Division of Wildlife and approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council.
Mark Wiley, a Division of Wildlife biologist in charge of the state’s turkey program, says he is encouraged heading into the season after coming off of two consecutive good poult years.
