During the recently-completed hunt, which covered two weekends, youth hunters harvested a total of 1,309 birds. That was up slightly from 2022, when 1,258 turkeys were taken. The record total was set in 2020, when 1,733 turkeys were harvested.
All told, over the past five years, youth hunters have averaged a harvest of 1,398 turkeys.
The end of March is upon us and that marks the beginning of the spring turkey hunting season in Illinois. As is customary, those 18 or younger get the honor of being the first to hit the timber in search of a prize gobbler.
