Commentary: Stocking hatchery trout over wild trout is always a bad idea

I recently testified at the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s quarterly meeting. This is the first time I’ve been back to headquarters in seven years. I repeated what former director Ralph Abele once said at his retirement dinner at my retirement dinner in 2018 – “I’ll be hovering above the clouds and swoop down when necessary.”
The board is proposing a study to re-stock Freeman Run, a wild brown trout stream in Potter County.

Commentary: Lobbying a poor use of Pennsylvania Game Commission funds

I recently read the front-page article by Tom Venesky in the March 15 issue headlined “Senate grills PGC on hiring lobbying firm” with great personal and professional interest.
As the former executive director of the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, I always strived to be apolitical (taking an unbiased position in regard to political matters) because fish and wildlife don’t vote – but anglers, boaters and hunters do!

Commentary: Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission takes no separate enforcement action in fish-kill case

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission took no separate enforcement action in the Valley Brook Country Club Pesticide Runoff Case that killed 122,586 fish in Chartiers Creek, Washington County. That was troubling.
During my 30-year career as a commission fisheries biologist and chief of the agency’s Environmental Services Division, my staff and I assisted commission law enforcement in the investigation of hundreds of water pollution incidents and fish kills.
