Commentary: Lobbying a poor use of Pennsylvania Game Commission funds

The author, John Arway, writes that he finds it difficult to understand why a state agency would want to enter the lobbying arena since agency positions should always be supported by the facts, science and public opinion that form the basis for any legislative or policy action. I recently read the front-page article by Tom Venesky in the March 15 issue headlined “Senate grills PGC on hiring lobbying firm” with great personal and professional interest.
As the former executive director of the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, I always strived to be apolitical (taking an unbiased position in regard to political matters) because fish and wildlife don’t vote – but anglers, boaters and hunters do!
