An Alaskan moose-hunting saga, Part 3: The real work begins

After the shot, I jumped in my canoe and raced across the narrow channel so fast you could have waterskied behind me. But once I reached the mainland, I was nervous about what I might find. I hoped like heck not an injured moose.
And then, there he was, velvet antler pointing skyward, the animal stone dead. Still, I approached cautiously, making sure I was entirely certain he was dead. Had I been shooting at a target, it would have been a terrible shot.

An Alaskan moose-hunting saga: The hunt begins

Given Minnesota’s low moose numbers, I’ll probably never have the chance to hunt these kings of the forest around home. That’s OK, though. I experienced enough moose hunting to last me a lifetime during a fateful hunt many years ago.
When the recession of 2008 hit, I found myself out of a job. The following summer, a buddy and I road-tripped to Alaska. It was a seat-of-your-pants expedition. We didn’t know if we were going just to be tourists for a couple of weeks or what the plan was. We didn’t care.

Worm hot spots for fishing: Here’s where to find them

When I was a kid, I had to be ready to go fishing on a moment’s notice. Luckily for my brothers and me, we had a milk run that was sure to produce the needed worms for short-notice fishing, and collecting them was almost as much fun as catching fish.
The yard at Grandma’s cabin was stacked with worm-producing hot spots. And I should note, it’s helpful to have lots of concrete gnomes, flower boxes, and other grandma-y garden-y stuff for good worm production.

Lake Superior surveys show lake herring pull off a much-needed massive year-class in 2022

The Lake Superior fishery got a much-needed boost when lake herring pulled off an epic spawning event in 2022, surveys are revealing.
“Based on the info we’re getting from the (U.S. Geological Survey), it’s a banner year-class,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor for the state DNR. “It’s rivaling or exceeding the 1984 year-class.”
Lake herring, also known as cisco or tullibee, are the primary native prey species in Lake Superior.

Here are 10 things you can do to improve your local fishing

They say the best way to make an impact in the world is to act locally. And there are things that you can actually do to make a difference on your local waters.
It might not change the world and we might not all be dancing and singing “Kumbaya,” but by taking action and encouraging your friends to do likewise, you can bring about change.

Expand your shed-hunting horizons by hitting the road

Make sure you check your intended state’s regulations before you go.
Once you’ve got a state in mind, contact the state’s wildlife department. Ask wildlife biologists about wintering areas. Check out hunter success rates. Do your homework, just like you would on a big-game hunt. Again, ask lots of questions.

Recent Minnesota DNR surveys show booming Lake Superior prey fish numbers

Preliminary Minnesota DNR surveys indicate that 2022 may have been an exceptional spawning year for Superior’s native prey species.
“I’ve been doing those (fall) surveys since 2012, and I’ve never seen a fraction of those numbers,” said Cory Goldsworthy, the DNR’s Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor.
