Jeffrey Frischkorn: America is a nation of riflemen

I walk past the parked steel gun cabinet more frequently that I prefer – much more frequently, in fact.
Indeed, my movements shadow what was easily the preferred place to pull out a firearm: one of three over-unders, a side-by-side, a quartet of slide-action shotguns, along with a solo semi-auto shotgun. There stands no personal objection to owning, shooting, or using these firearms.

Jeff Frischkorn: Our angling and hunting lives are but a short glimpse

It was cold. More than enough cold, in fact, for someone who hadn’t felt the touch of a deer-gun-season winter day in a number of years.
Try three, or maybe it’s been four. Possibly five. I know more than three years because it was November 2021 when I shot my last Ohio whitetail. And that was with my crossbow. Ditto with 2020, and nothing by any means in 2019. So, I guess, it’s been at least several years. That’s terrible, I must admit.

Ohio’s deer gun hunters were largely successful in 2023

Many deer hunters in Ohio laughed in the face of weather adversity during the statewide firearms season and still did better than just pretty well.

They came within 1.5% of the three-year average for the season and were off only 1,814 animals over the 2022 week-long firearms deer-hunting season. In all, “gun” deer hunters in Ohio shot 70,118 animals Nov. 27 through Dec. 3.

Harvest declines during the 2023 Ohio fall turkey hunting season

Doing the math clearly shows that the number of turkeys killed and the number of hunters who pursued the birds slumped during Ohio’s recently concluded fall turkey hunting season.
The total number of turkeys killed from Oct. 14 through Nov. 12 was 753 birds. Broken down, this figure was a reported 364 females (adults and juveniles), 368 males (adults and juveniles), plus another 21 birds listed as “unknown.”

Opening day of Ohio deer season was a boom for many gun hunters

While a lot of hunters – more than 19,000 of them – bagged their bucks and does on Ohio’s firearms deer-hunting opener Nov. 27, bunches more did not.
And though Ohio Outdoor News has a stable of gifted writers who know which end is up on a deer-hunting firearm, they weren’t so fortunate. Among them were Steve Pollick, Tom Cross, Larry Moore, and John Hageman. All were in the field on Monday past. But none were successful, at least on the opener.

Is that old spinning reel worth saving?

While (sort of) nibbling away at the inside of my cheek, I also mulled a spinning reel’s exterior workings.
The mental debate became whether the reel was salvageable or disposable. It happens eventually with every one of my fishing reels. In the old days of Garcia Mitchell 300s (the chief of the Mitchell clansman) I could disrobe a reel to its most basic components, wipe them down, add some grease where grease was required and oil where oil was requisite.

Cool discovery: Fish Ohio angler’s journal uncovered

Sometimes it takes a good idea a while to germinate and then sprout before blossoming.
Perhaps that will be the case with a really cool and practical Ohio Division of Wildlife fishing-related document that practically no angler has ever heard of, much less seen or handled. That case is even true for some wildlife division officials. What we have is a 17-sheet/doubled-sided, spiral bound document called the “Fish Ohio Journal.” The first 25 pages are all identical and highlight components that smart anglers would want to record for posterity and future reference.
