There’s a movement happening in the firearms industry as gun enthusiasts want the freedom to customize their handguns and major manufacturers have found the solution.
Originally, Sig Sauer and more recently Ruger have created platforms with serialized fire control units or “FCUs.” This modular adaptation to the normal design has created ripple effects in the world of pistols. Some of my fondest memories involve shooting with my father and older brothers. Back then it was normal to spend all afternoon shooting clay pigeons that were tossed with a hand-launcher, or having dinger-hitting competitions for bragging rights with a Ruger 10/22.
Yet, as I got older and moved to areas of the state with less accessible shooting situations, my range time slowly turned into strictly hunting preparation, confirming zero on my deer rifle, or checking the pattern on my turkey choke. Since 2013 New York gun owners have had to deal with the confusion that ensued after the passage of the NYSAFE Act. Like many residents of New York, I was unsure if I had just become a criminal by simply possessing an AR-15 that I’d legally owned for years.
Getting real answers from anyone of authority back then seemed impossible. Everyone had serious questions and we all had to choose how to proceed, and carefully. A decade (11 years, actually) later, the dust has settled a bit and there seems to be some clearer options for anyone wishing to utilize the AR-15 platform in a way that’s legal in this state and still appealing.
