Panfish rule the Goose Lake roost in Minnesota’s Chisago County, but options are many

Chisago County’s Goose Lake consists of two basins that total a bit more than 750 acres. The basins are connected by a narrow but navigable channel that runs under a county road bridge.
The north end, where the public access is located, is basically bowl-shaped and shallow. The south basin features more structure and it’s deeper, so this is where you’ll want to concentrate most of your fishing efforts, especially during the open-water season.

Infertile waters make Sturgeon Lake in Minnesota’s St. Louis County a modest fishing option

On paper, Sturgeon Lake looks like it has all the makings of a fine walleye fishery. It’s a large body of water with plenty of depth, there’s a lot of structure, and it’s part of a chain and thus has an inlet and an outlet.
But this St. Louis County system has some limiting factors.

Big Spunk Lake in Minnesota’s Stearns County: short on walleyes, long on bass, panfish, pike

Big Spunk Lake, or Upper Spunk, as it’s locally known, is part of a three-lake system connected by small creeks. The chain also includes Lower Spunk and Middle Spunk to the north.
At 440 acres, Big Spunk is the largest of these three lakes located in the quiet town of Avon. Generally, not much has changed over the years on Big Spunk; it continues to be a typical Stearns County bass/panfish-type of lake.

Clearwater Lake: Come for the lakers, stay for the scenery in Minnesota’s Cook County

Located about 40 minutes from Grand Marais, Minn., up the Gunflint Trail, Cook County’s Clearwater Lake is a deep, cold Canadian Shield system. It’s also one of the clearest lakes in this area, and partially is located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Clearwater is known primarily for its lake trout production.

The book on Ruth Lake in Minnesota’s Crow Wing County: plentiful largemouths, panfish, pike

The first thing that stands out about Crow Wing County’s Ruth Lake is its 600 acres of amazingly clear water. It’s historically had water clarity of 20 feet or more, and it does to this day.
The lake also features some good structure, including several pronounced points, bars, sharp breaks, rock, gravel, and vegetation. At first glance, Ruth looks like it should be an excellent walleye fishery, but it’s more noted for producing largemouth bass, panfish, and northern pike.
