Southern Adirondacks town debates use of ‘ice-eaters’ on lakes

A town in the southern Adirondacks is considering a law that would regulate how property owners on two lakes in town can use “ice eaters” and bubblers to protect docks and shoreline in the winter amid a debate over their impacts.
Safety concerns for those who venture onto the ice of Glen Lake and Lake Sunnyside in the Town of Queensbury prompted the Queensbury Town Board to discuss the issue in late December, urged by residents who are concerned by the open water and unpredictable ice caused by ice prevention devices.

New York’s ice anglers maximize earliest start in years

Lake Luzerne Town Supervisor Gene Merlino was surprised but excited to see ice fishermen on Lake Luzerne on Dec. 6, the earliest he could recall there being fishable ice on the southern Adirondack lake in years.
“It was great to see. Maybe we are going to get a real winter,” he said.

Training exercise continues search for New York hunter who disappeared in 2015

Ten years ago this past November, 82-year-old Rensselaer County resident Tom Messick Sr. ventured into the woods of northern Warren County, N.Y., to hunt for deer with friends and family.
Messick was never heard from again, and despite thousands of hours of searching by forest rangers, trained volunteer search crews, search dogs and countless others, the mystery of Messick’s disappearance continues to confound state and local officials.

New York’s Essex County shutting down century old fish hatchery

Essex County and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation jointly announced in early November that the Essex County Fish Hatchery is going to cease operations, the result of concerns about wastewater released by the century-old hatchery that will likely impact trout stocking in a number of high-profile trout waters in the county.

Famed ‘Trestle Pool’ all but eliminated as anglers question Salmon River project in New York

Anglers who returned to the Salmon River for the annual fall runs of trout and salmon from Lake Ontario were met with a host of changes, some of which are being met with criticism and questions.
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation, working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, completed several habitat improvement and bank stabilization projects in 1.2 miles of the Salmon River in the Town of Altmar, Oswego County. Among them was a re-working of the famed “Trestle Hole.”

New York DEC conducting review of Lake George salmon; results may impact future stocking

Few anglers spend as much time fishing the depths of Lake George as Burke Collins. Year-round, he is fishing through the ice or from his kayak, and he’s caught hundreds and hundreds of lake trout, many topping 30 inches.
What Collins has only seen a few of, though, are the landlocked Atlantic salmon that are stocked by the thousands in the lake each year.
“I’ve caught four or five the past two years,” he said.

New York browse study will look at impact whitetails have on developing forests

Researchers are trying to gauge the impact white-tailed deer have on redeveloping woodlands through a new study at a popular preserve in the Southern Adirondacks.
Two new fenced-in areas have appeared in woods on the property of Pack Demonstration Forest in Warrensburg, Warren County, N.Y., but these fences aren’t meant to keep people out of the woods. Instead, the fencing is part of a project to show just how much of an impact white-tailed deer have on forest growth.

Heat waves challenge trout, anglers alike in parts of New York

Summer 2025 is not turning out to be the greatest season weather-wise for New York’s trout stream anglers.
Spring brought unprecedented rain in parts of the state, leaving many streams too high and unfishable well into May. The faucets all but turned off by mid June, bringing drought to parts of the state and dropping streams to record low levels amid an unusually hot summer.

Cormorant concerns rise on New York’s Lake George

Joe Greco, a longtime charter boat captain on Lake George, frequently sees them lurking on several of the lake’s islands, waiting to gobble the sportfish that Greco and his clients are chasing – double-crested cormorants, a fish-eating bird that has raised concerns on Lake George and other Adirondack lakes in recent years.
A decade or so ago, cormorants were rare on Lake George.
