Madison resident Jim Trumpy named 2023 State Natural Areas Volunteer Steward of the Year by Wisconsin DNR
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Madison resident Jim Trumpy as the 2023 State Natural Areas Volunteer Steward of the Year for his contributions to Mazomanie Oak Barrens State Natural Area.
Trumpy has volunteered at Mazomanie Oak Barrens State Natural Area for the past eight years. He learned about the need during a field trip to the site, where he learned about this unique property. After the trip, he asked one of the leaders if they needed help managing the site.

Updated: Minnesota and Wisconsin DNR partner to capture 400 invasive carp in the Mississippi River after 77 more were caught Dec. 4
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the capture of 323 invasive carp on Nov. 30 in Pool 6 of the Mississippi River, near Trempealeau, Wis.
Species captured were 296 silver carp, 23 grass carp, and 4 bighead carp. This is the largest single capture of invasive carp that has occurred in Minnesota to date. The capture was made possible by tracking tagged invasive carp, which led agency staff and contracted commercial fishers to them for removal.

Ohio DNR, University of Toledo take on H2Ohio project to help protect Lake Erie
As part of Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) and the University of Toledo held a groundbreaking ceremony recently for a new project to restore wetland and stream channels. The University of Toledo Center for Alumni and Donor Engagement (CADE) project will improve the flow of water to filter runoff more effectively before it enters the Ottawa River and eventually Lake Erie.

Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted harvests 8-point buck with crossbow
Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted harvested an eight-point whitetail buck in Morrow County in mid-November with a crossbow made right here in Ohio, according to the governor’s office.
“I love crossbow hunting during the fall,” said Husted. “The weather is mild, the trees are beautiful, the harvesting of crops is active, the aroma in the air is refreshing, and there is so much activity in the outdoors with the animals in the forest actively preparing for winter. It’s peaceful and wonderful.”
