$200 federal tax on firearm suppressors goes away Jan. 1

Legislation passed on July 4 brought a major shift to the firearms suppressor world. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, the $200 federal tax stamp on silencers will be eliminated.
Firearms owners will still have to complete the ATF Form 4 and pass a background check – none of that goes away. But the $200 payment that’s been required since the 1930s is now out the door.

Profiling the latest in the ATV marketplace

There’s a trend toward personalization among buyers of off-road vehicles, especially for those who are purchasing high-end UTVs.
Many are looking for special accessories to enhance the vehicle’s performance, aesthetic appeal, or comfort, and the industry is embracing customization in ways that go beyond traditional options. Manufacturers, however, have not abandoned buyers whose needs and budget are more modest.

Important features to look for when buying a gun safe

All of us who own firearms – whether it’s one gun or more than a dozen guns – bear the responsibility of keeping them all safe and secure. That means storing them in a proper gun safe.

The most important job of a gun safe is keeping people out and keeping firearms secure. Gun safes deter access to unauthorized family members and visitors, but they also can protect firearms and other valuables from storm damage, water damage, and fire. Here are several important features to consider when looking for a gun safe.

Summer food plot maintenance: Lime, fertilizer, mowing and more

As spring rains soak the landscape, many perennial food plots produce large amounts of nutritious deer foods. But as desirable food plot species like clover and alfalfa grow, so too does undesirable weeds and grasses.
It’s inevitable that some unwanted weeds and grasses are going to find their way into your food plot. Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to eliminate every single one, use these strategies to minimize their impact and maximize your plot’s health.

Compact tractors that make habitat work a breeze

Having been raised on a dairy and crop farm, I learned early on the value of having the right tractor for tilling, planting, harvesting, and numerous other tasks.
More recently, I’ve used tractors to improve and maintain wooded land and adjoining grass areas. And you can do the same with wooded land or other rural property you’ve worked hard to acquire.
Finding that “right” tractor, however, takes some time and requires a fair amount of research.

How do you get proficient shooting a handgun? Fit, grip and trigger control all play a role

Learning to shoot a handgun accurately is generally more challenging than becoming proficient with a rifle or shotgun. Whether it’s a micro compact pistol, full-sized semi-automatic or revolver, handguns are short, are usually designed to have heavier trigger pulls, and are inherently subject to more human-produced error due, in part, to having shorter barrels and sighting planes.

Here’s how to manage a timber sale on your land

Most of us who enjoy spending time in the outdoors readily recognize the recreational value of owning wooded land – having a place to hunt, hike, camp, view wildlife, and more.

Wooded land also can provide economic benefits through periodic managed timber harvests that provide income through the sale of saw logs, bolts (short logs or sections of a large log, usually less than 8 feet long), and pulpwood. However, selling timber from your land may well represent one of the largest financial transactions you’ll ever make.
