New five-year plan focuses on lake trout, salmon, black bass in New York’s popular Lake George

The Queen of American Lakes, as Lake George is known, is about to undergo a five-year assessment of its lake trout, black bass and salmon populations that could eventually change the way these and their forage species are managed in the 32-mile long lake in the southeastern Adirondacks.
On Jan. 12 the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the release of the plan, which will focus on collecting data.

Joe Hackett, well-known Adirondack guide and writer, passes

Joe Hackett, who for decades worked as a professional outdoor guide in the heart of the Adirondacks, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
Hackett’s obituary in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, a publication he wrote for, said “For more than four decades as a professional guide, Joe led clients and friends through the waterways and trails of the Adirondacks. He took people from quiet streams brimming with native trout to the region’s grandest hotels and private retreats.”

There are certain fish and wildlife species out there whose very existence, or lack thereof, is a measure not only of the environment and the habitat they thrive in, but the efforts to support their surrounding ecosystems.
Two species that quickly come to mind are common loons in the Adirondacks, and lake trout anywhere they exist. Many would classify brook trout in the same category, as New York’s official state fish certainly has its challenges, and in modern times, seems to have always had.

Busy antler measuring season about to begin in New York

With deer season in New York all but over (Long Island runs through Jan. 31) the New York State Big Buck Club is gearing up for what is anticipated to be another busy antler measuring season. New Adirondack Brook Trout Pond Management Plan built to protect a ‘precious resource’

Nearly two years after first engaging anglers on the topic, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has released a final Adirondack Brook Trout Pond Management Plan. 
Among the proposals in the 15-year plan (2026-2040) is a future ban on the use of baitfish within the Blue Line of the Adirondack Park (with a long list of exempted lakes), and maintaining the current five fish of any size limit.

Like many hunters, at the time of this writing I’m spending the final days of 2025 reflecting on another deer season. Even though this one is still going on courtesy of the late (later) muzzleloading season in New York’s Southern Zone known as the Holiday Week Hunt, which I do intend to partake in at some point.
When gathering with friends and relatives during the Christmas holiday the expected question, “how was your deer season?” once again popped up on several occasions.

Carl Finkelson feels like he had a pretty good 2025 hunting season. The 37-year-old hunter and bowhunter education instructor from Mt. Pleasant, in Westchester County, N.Y., who works for the White Plains school district, harvested fine bucks during both the archery and late muzzleloading seasons.
