Crossbow enthusiasts in New York have gotten their wish. On Tuesday, Aug. 26, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed bill S6360/A8330A into law, which allows the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to permit the use of crossbows for the taking of big game in any area long bows are permitted.
The law, which after passing both houses in June was delivered to Hochul on Friday, Aug. 22, requires crossbow hunters to take a bowhunter education course and purchase an archery hunting privilege.

Gary Huber has seen it many times. Actually, he’s heard it many times when he answers his phone and on the other end of the line is a hunter, often desperate, in need of his licensed leashed tracking dog services.
Huber’s nonprofit group, Deer Search of WNY, Inc. is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to helping hunters recover wounded big game, deer or bear, with the use of leashed tracking dogs. He and the approximately 20 handlers that comprise his group are all licensed through New York State.

The use of lead-free ammunition and fishing tackle is another one of those topics somewhat polarizing New York’s outdoor community these days.
In years past, legislation has been proposed that would ban the use of ammo containing lead on all lands owned by New York State as well as New York City watershed properties. Such legislation cleared the state Senate two years ago, but didn’t get out of committee in the Assembly. There’s no telling what may come from future legislative sessions.

The 19th edition of the World Black Bass Championships is slated for Sept. 4-6, in South Africa, and Team USA coach and legendary professional bass angler Kevin VanDam recently announced his six-man team to represent the United States.
An Aug. 4 USAangling press release said the team will be a mix of savvy veterans and emerging stars. VanDam, who hand-picked the squad, said it also contains a big dose of the unquantifiable but highly sought team sports concept known as “chemistry.”

Hemlock woolly adelgid, a tiny insect that preys mainly on hemlock trees, continues to expand in the North Country as two new infestations were discovered recently in the Adirondacks.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Hemlock Initiative at Cornell University, and Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program confirmed the infestations on the western shore of Lake Champlain near Port Douglas in the town of Ausable, Essex County. HWA also recently was discovered near the north end of Great Sacandaga Lake near the Conklingville Dam, in Saratoga County.

The long-anticipated opening of a new Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World retail store came to fruition with the store’s grand opening held July 30.
The new 70,000 square-foot store, which employs approximately 140 people, is located just south of Exit 9 near Interstate 87, and less than 20 miles north of Albany, N.Y. An estimated 3,000 people attended the Evening for Conservation event that coincided with the grand opening. Outdoor celebrities in attendance included bass fishing veterans Roland Martin and Kevin VanDam along with current competitors Chris Johnston and Charlie Evans.
