Star Watch: The incredible Andromeda Galaxy

Astronomers tell us that there are billions of galaxies in the Universe besides our own Milky Way. The Andromeda Galaxy is special though, because it’s the only other galaxy that we can see from Earth with the naked eye. Scientists tell us that it may contain up to a trillion stars, more than the 200 billion or so found in our Milky Way.

Star Watch: Examining humanity’s home in space — the International Space Station

What is longer than a football field and travels at more than 17,000 miles an hour? The answer is: the International Space Station (ISS). This amazing spacecraft has been orbiting the Earth once every 90 minutes for more than 20 years at an altitude of about 250 miles, and with humans on board!

Star Watch: The ‘Ring of Fire’ coming Oct. 14

The big news in the heavens this month is the annular solar eclipse that will occur in the United States on Oct. 14. This event happens when our moon is between the Earth and sun but farther from us in its elliptical orbit. At this point, it only blocks the center of the sun resulting in an outer “ring of fire.”

Star Watch: What do we know about Saturn and its rings?

Nothing leaves an impression like looking through the eyepiece of a telescope and seeing Saturn and its rings for the first time. Saturn has the distinction of being the farthest planet from the Sun that can be seen with the naked eye, but we need at least a small telescope to see its rings.

Star watch: Planning ahead for solar eclipses

“Eclipse chasers” will be on the move twice during the next nine months in response to an annular solar eclipse on Oct. 14, 2023 followed by a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. On both dates all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. will experience at least a partial solar eclipse, weather permitting.

Southeast Minnesota hosts 50th anniversary of NWTF state chapter

Wild turkey hunting enthusiasts and other conservationists gathered at North Park in Caledonia on Saturday, July 22, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Minnesota Chapter.
City Mayor “Tank” Schroeder welcomed attendees for an exciting day and evening of commemorating the wild turkey success story. Five decades ago, the NWTF, in cooperation with the Minnesota DNR, launched the process to help restore a now-iconic species to the fields and forests of the southeast.

Star watch: View two of our closest neighbors in June

During the last half of June, 2023 two of our closest neighboring planets will be in view in the night sky. On June 21 and 22, Mars and Venus will be joined by a waxing, crescent Moon in the western sky just after sunset. They might even be close enough to get all three in the same view through binoculars.
