Michigan bowhunters can expect hunt similar to last year

The countdown has begun.
In a few weeks more than a quarter-million bowhunters are expected to head afield in Michigan in hope of tagging a prized white-tailed deer.
Last year, according to the DNR, some 286,581 hunters participated in the state’s regular bow season, which runs Oct. 1-Nov. 14 and Dec. 1 through Jan. 1. Those bowhunters killed an estimated 110,339 whitetails including 79,045 bucks and 31,294 antlerless deer.

EHD spreading in Michigan’s southern Lower Peninsula

This year’s outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, as reported in a recent edition of Michigan Outdoor News, continues to spread in southern Lower Michigan.
Chad Fedewa, the acting deer, elk and moose specialist with the Michigan DNR, told Michigan Outdoor News that the outbreak of EHD likely will get worse before it gets better.
“In late July we got our first confirmed case, in St. Joe County, and that’s pretty early,” Fedewa said. “In most years we don’t find it until mid- to late-September. Then we get a hard frost and the midge that carries EHD dies off.”

Stocked lakers, splake are a hit on Golden Lake in Iron County, Michigan

Iron County’s Golden Lake has a healthy smallmouth bass population. However, anglers simply targeting just bass are doing themselves a disservice as the lake also features a robust lake trout and splake fishery.
Michigan is home to hundreds of deep, cold, glacial lakes that are ripe with a variety of trout, and Golden Lake is one of them.

Outdoor Observations: A new era of anti-hunting propaganda seen in Michigan, other states

It’s been almost 20 years since our last real bout with animal rights and anti-hunter groups here in Michigan – not counting the wolf debate. In 2004 Michigan became the 41st state in the nation to legalize the hunting of mourning doves – the country’s No. 1 game bird.

Local and national waterfowl numbers paint a positive outlook for Michigan hunters

With an increase in waterfowl numbers at both the state and national levels, and favorable wetlands conditions across the state and nation, Michigan’s duck and goose hunters can expect a good hunt when the season kicks off next month.
Nationally, duck numbers increased slightly from last year while the local population saw solid increases over 2023’s record low numbers.
“Michigan spring breeding duck estimates were way up, including mallards,” DNR Waterfowl Specialist Barb Avers told Michigan Outdoor News. “Our banding activities over the past two months have matched that – we are seeing a lot of ducks.”

Bass, panfish plentiful in Algonquin Lake in Barry County, Mich.

Barry County’s Algonquin Lake qualifies as a sleeper water body for anglers. Although it’s not known for producing trophy-sized fish, it does have healthy naturally occurring bass, pike, and panfish populations and a modest stocked walleye fishery.
But for a couple of reasons, it doesn’t receive a lot of angling pressure.

Outdoor Observations: Here’s hoping common sense prevails in CDC regulation on importing dogs

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created a new dog import regulation that took effect August 1. But the new regulation is so broad and intrusive for dog breeders and owners that Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation last week filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan against the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services to overturn the new regulation.

Healthy bear numbers in Michigan provide a favorable outlook for fall hunters

A great year for soft mast crops and a stable to growing bear population in most parts of northern Michigan should result in a good hunting season this fall.
“I’m really excited about the upcoming season. We’ve got great bear populations throughout the UP and NLP, which are the result of allowing them to grow for a period of time since 2012,” said Cody Norton, the DNR’s bear specialist who hopes to fill his tag for the Gwinn BMU this fall. “The hard mast crop, weather, and other factors will likely impact hunter success during the season, but we have all of the major components heading into season that should make it successful and enjoyable for hunters.”
