Michigan EHD cases continuing to spread with 2,000 dead deer reported

This fall’s first frost can’t get here soon enough for deer hunters in southwest Lower Michigan.
That’s where a nasty outbreak of dreaded epizootic hemorrhagic disease has been confirmed and has been killing healthy whitetails since early September.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said hunter Kyle Ender of Van Buren County. “I hunt in Berrien, Van Buren, and Cass counties and at just about every waterway you can smell death.”

Upper Herring Lake is a 540-acre, relatively oval lake located about five miles south of Frankfort, in Benzie County. It offers good fishing for a variety of species.
“Upper Herring is a shallow, weedy lake, but it has good bass and walleye populations, and everything in between,” says David Rose, of Wildfishing Guide Service.

Outdoor Observations: Might decision of antlerless-only harvest during Michigan’s Liberty and Independence hunts get reversed?

Baseball legend Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over.” That famous quote could certainly apply to the recent Michigan Natural Resources Commission decision to make the Liberty and Independence hunts for antlerless deer only.
Since voting 4-3 at its July meeting to change the bag limit to antlerless-only for those hunts beginning in 2025, the commission has received considerable push-back from both disabled hunters and those supporting the youth hunt.

Outdoor Observations: Change in Michigan buck harvest proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks

Education is a wonderful thing. Yes you can teach an old dog new tricks.
We’re born with a brain devoid of facts, figures, and memories but over the years we learn from our own actions and activities and through interactions with others who have different life experiences than our own. We learn from reading, listening, exploring and simply enjoying life.
In Michigan it looks like most deer hunters have learned to change their thinking on hunting white-tailed bucks.
