Michigan legislation would require COs to use body cameras, search warrants

State representatives Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) and Dave Prestin (R-Cedar River) have introduced two bills that would affect the way the Michigan DNR’s Law Enforcement Division does business.
The bill introduced by Markkanen would require conservation officers to wear body cameras when conducting official business. The bill introduced by Prestin would update warrant requirements for accessing private property.

Don’t blink: Michigan’s annual sturgeon season on Black Lake ends in 17 minutes

If you got delayed at the gas station or donut shop on your way to the Black Lake sturgeon season you likely missed the entire season.
The highly regulated, annual possession season in Michigan – open to hook-and-line fishing or spearing – began at 8 a.m. on Feb 1. It ended just 17 minutes later when the six-fish limit had been reached. By the time the word got out that the season had ended one more lake sturgeon had been iced.

Quality and variety abounds on Lake Independence in Michigan’s Marquette County

Michigan’s record yellow perch – a whopping 21-inch, 3-pound 12-ouncer – was caught in Lake Independence in the Upper Peninsula’s Marquette County by George Slutter back in 1947. That record stands today, 77 years later.
Although there likely isn’t another perch that large swimming in Lake Independence today, it still supports great perch, pike, walleye, and smallmouth bass fisheries.

Michigan Outdoor Observations: New chairman of the Natural Resources Commission appointed

Regarding the front-page story in the January 3 edition of Michigan Outdoor News, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has appointed a new chairman of the state Natural Resources Commission.
Former U.S. Congressman Dan Kildee (D-Flint Township) got the nod earlier this month to succeed Tom Baird, who stepped down at the end of his first term as chairman of the seven-member, governor-appointed commission. The governor appoints each member of the commission and the state Senate holds advice and consent power over the NRC and can either approve or deny the governor’s appointees.

Variety awaits anglers on Oakland’s Pontiac Lake

A few decades ago local anglers considered it a waste of time to even consider fishing on Oakland County’s Pontiac Lake.
After a dam repair project in the 1980s went awry, the entire fish population in Pontiac Lake was wiped out. New fish including bluegill, bass, pike, and crappie were stocked in the 1980s, but it took years and some tweaking by fisheries managers to get the fishery in this 585-acre lake back up to par.

Change of plans leads to massive non-typical 23-pointer that sets a new Kent County record in Michigan

Russ Papke’s annual trip to deer camp in Ohio was a bust this year and left the Howard City hunter “discouraged” and “bummed out.”
But that disappointment was short-lived. A couple days after returning home early from his Ohio hunt, Papke shot the biggest buck of his life on his in-law’s property in Rockford in Kent County, Mich.
“I guess everything happens for a reason,” Papke told Michigan Outdoor News. “I was supposed to be in deer camp in Ohio with my buddies.”
