Ben Moyer: In the outdoors, a good partner makes the day

Many things make a good day outdoors. One is the right partner, whose likes and skills are fitted to that outing.
I’m fortunate to have enjoyed woods and water with different good partners on various kinds of excursions. A recent trip is a fine example of a day made better by who you share it with.

Ben Moyer: Fur war backfires on native wildlife in Pennsylvania

Unintended consequences. These often haunt human intentions. It’s likely outdoor people who value clean water, fish and wildlife, and public lands will be lamenting a lot of those in coming years, but this column is about an unintended – unimagined – consequence that’s already happening.
This one is on the people who, in their condemnation of trapping, and their persecution of anyone who has worn natural fur, quickened a native Pennsylvania wildlife species’ slide toward extinction, our own Allegheny woodrat.

Ben Moyer: Magazine ad a public lands wake-up for Pennsylvania

An ad in a current outdoor magazine points out what Pennsylvanians’ future access to public land for hunting and fishing could lose if politicians who have stated we have too much state game land acreage prevail in their aims. They have pointed out game lands but be sure that all public lands are their potential targets.
The ad is full-page and color – not cheap to run – in a national magazine read from Boston to Los Angeles, and from Alaska to Florida. The magazine’s editorial content advocates for public lands and waters, but ad money is hard for any publication to eschew.

Ben Moyer: Impromptu low-cost trip to Pennsylvania elk country is rewarding

Hoping that readers might find interest in this columnist’s impromptu trip recently around the northcentral PA Wilds, I’ll recap the excursion.
The trip’s most focused destination was Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County, known for some of the darkest skies in the eastern United States. Free time on my calendar coinciding with October’s new moon, when lunar brightness would be zero, was a motivator for the whole expedition.

Ben Moyer: Gap in schedule yields some needed time in Pennsylvania’s outdoors

These columns are often complaints, condemnations, or sometimes calls to action. They generally address problems that ought to be fixed, issues being ignored, or some potential that could be met.
Such regular beat-downs of negativity get old. Anyone watching the political campaigns of our day feels that already. I wouldn’t blame readers if they sometimes turned this page, looking for something more uplifting. It’s out there – in our Pennsylvania outdoors.

Ben Moyer: Hunting’s approval runs broad and deep in Pennsylvania

You can feel tension these days. It portends the political climax we’ll reach in a few weeks. It would all be more constructive if the intense rhetoric could be tamped down to rational discourse. Everyone will be glad when it’s over.
There is one facet of the hype uniquely relevant to readers of this publication, and which readers can analyze and reject. That’s because we have credible informative resources that tell the quieter truth. First, consider the misleading exaggerations.

Ben Moyer: Lifejacket wear is easy and smart

On a recent windy and overcast morning, I thought poor fishing was the worst thing to deal with. But while paddling my kayak back toward the launch, a new concern appeared.
I witnessed a couple launching a small johnboat. Before the man stepped in, I watched him instruct his female companion to sit on a high-perched casting chair at the bow, which she did. The chair seemed excessively elevated, which placed the craft’s center of gravity inadvisably high.

Ben Moyer: Replacing golf course with visitor center at Michaux State Forest a timely, sound decision

The Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania is a different kind of place. Named for French botanists Andre and Francois Michaux, who cataloged American flora in the 1790s, it’s an island of highland forest.
Lapping at the island shore is a sea of intensely cropped farmland, swelling town centers, and advancing commercial sprawl. Less than three hours away are the metro swaths of Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia. The Michaux is a sylvan haven in high demand.

Ben Moyer: Pennsylvania must find a solution to simmering tension between wildlife and agriculture

Legislation now under consideration in the Pennsylvania Senate rivets overdue notice toward the simmering tension, nationwide, between wildlife management and agriculture. It’s a huge concern, with far-reaching implications for farm viability, wildlife, hunting and conservation of intact landscapes.
If enacted, several bills in the Senate would remove our state’s prohibition on Sunday hunting. But farm interests, which long opposed Sunday hunting, wanted concessions before dropping their objection.
