Despite its size at more than 800 acres, Franklin Lake is lightly developed, thanks to the fact that most of its shoreline is managed by Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest staff.
While Franklin is in Forest County, the lake is only about 11 miles from the popular Vilas County tourist town of Eagle River, so its location and very clear water make Franklin a popular summer recreation destination. That means anglers might want to fish early and late in the day from June through August.
