Bear seasons begin New York’s big game hunts; here’s what to know

Black bear hunting is about to get underway in New York, and it will only intensify as the month goes on. An early firearms season in a number of southeastern New York Region 3 and 4 Wildlife Management Units begins Sept. 12. And on Sept. 19, the long firearms season in the Adirondack portion of the Northern Zone also opens for black bears, with the archery season opening in the remaining Northern Zone WMUs for bears that same date.
