Youth weekend launches New York’s spring gobbler season

Since New York’s first youth turkey hunting weekend in 2024, thousands of young hunters ages 12-15 have gone afield accompanied by a mentor, typically the last weekend in April. Their goal is to hear the thundering sound of a close-by gobbler and witness the appearance of a fanned-out tom, all in hopes of getting a shot at what many consider to be a big game bird. The youth hunt takes place April 25-26, and New York’s regular spring gobbler season is May 1-31. (Stock photo)

The turkey hunting season in New York officially gets underway with the annual youth turkey hunting weekend, April 25-26. Since 2004, the hunt has provided the opportunity for junior hunters (ages 12-15) to go afield with an experienced adult mentor and in many cases is a young hunter’s first real hunting experience.
New York’s regular spring gobbler season begins on May 1.
