Wisconsin volunteers get crash course on importance of Karner blue butterflies

It may be small – only about the size of a nickel – but the Karner blue butterfly is a big deal to Chelsea Weinzinger.
That’s one of the reasons why Weinzinger, the Wisconsin DNR’s Karner blue recovery coordinator, showed up June 13 at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca. She led a group of nine volunteers that will help the DNR monitor the population of Karner blue butterflies, a federally endangered species and a species of concern in Wisconsin.
“Karners are a federally endangered species and Wisconsin holds the largest population in the world, so it is important to monitor the species,” she said.
