New report shows CWD spikes again in Illinois

Deer hunters in Illinois expecting a new high mark for confirmed CWD cases got what they expected from the DNR’s 2024-25 Surveillance and Management Report.
The report, released Aug. 22 and based on findings between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, reveals that 539 CWD-positive deer were identified from 12,444 deer samples collected statewide. Significant increases have been the norm the past few years, after several years of cases staying steady in double-digits.

Wisconsin Mixed Bag: Sandhill State Wildlife Area taking trapping applications through Sept. 15

The DNR is accepting applications for a special trapping season within the Sandhill State Wildlife Area designed to help the DNR achieve its furbearer management goals on the 9,150-acre property. The deadline to apply for the 2025-26 season is Monday, Sept. 15.

Winner of National Championship Musky Open in Wisconsin catches four fish

Bob Sommers, of St. Germain, Wis., released four muskies to win the 39th annual National Championship Musky Open held on Eagle River area lakes Aug. 15-17.
The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, along with the Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin, sponsor the tournament on seven lake families in the area. It’s billed as the largest amateur muskie tournament in the United States.
“This tournament is a catch– and–release tournament open to ages 8 and older and is designed for great family fun.”
