A close look at the downward trend of available deer licenses for North Dakota gun hunters

The number of deer-hunting gun licenses in North Dakota is being cut again in 2025, continuing a downward trend that has spanned a decade.
The N.D. Game and Fish Department has allocated 42,300 deer gun licenses for the upcoming season – a reduction of 7,800 licenses from last year and a drop of more than 27,000 licenses compared with the year 2000. NDG&F officials say the reduction reflects ongoing challenges to the state’s deer population.
