Four of us were heading to the spot where prairie dogs had built a hefty community and the landowner needed them thinned. Halfway there, we heard the telltale sound of a rattlesnake, and – with no one needing to utter a word or a sound – we all froze.
When the group’s movement stopped, so did the rattle, and I asked if anyone knew where the snake was lying. No one was sure, but no one was about to move to find out.
