New York lawmakers to focus on bills after budget delay

On April 28, nearly a month after the April 1 deadline, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an agreement had been reached with the state’s legislative leaders on key priorities in the Fiscal Year 2026 New York State Budget, which was poised to tally $254 billion.
But at press time, negotiations with the state legislature were still occurring and the budget had yet to pass, making it nearly six weeks late, and the latest since 2010. However, there was anticipation that passage was close to being realized as several items in the anticipated $254 billion budget continued to be negotiated. Among Hochul’s budget proposals was $357 million to be directed toward gun violence in New York.
