North Dakota celebrates 50 years of bighorn sheep hunting

For 50 years, North Dakota has offered a limited annual hunt for bighorn sheep. One of those permits is offered via auction each year, with last year’s winning bid a whopping $226,000 – dollars that fund the state’s bighorn-management program. (Photo by Jeff Benda)

Fifty years ago, North Dakota reintroduced bighorn sheep hunting, launching a conservation success story that continues today.
In 1975, the state held its first modern hunting season, selecting 12 hunters from a pool of 2,852 applicants. Last year, six hunters were chosen from 19,557 resident applicants and 334 nonresident applicants, while a seventh tag was auctioned off at the Wild Sheep Foundation’s Midwest Chapter banquet.
