‘Shedding’ some light on shed hunting

Whitetail shed antler hunting is a popular pastime in the offseason between the end of the deer hunting season and the beginning of spring turkey. Some hunters try to find matching pairs of shed antlers to document the growth of a target buck. (Stock photo)

On Jan. 26, I saw that a fork-horn buck that I am acquainted with was missing its right antler.
While the larger, most active breeder bucks are often the first to drop their antlers as testosterone levels sharply drop after the rut has been finished for a sufficient period of time, this nonetheless alerted me that deer antler shedding season was now underway.
