A long time ago when I was a clueless sophomore and maintaining passing grades in geometry was a daily struggle, I felt insulted when the teacher used the term “obtuse” while addressing our class.
Eventually I understood she was likely trying to explain a type of angle rather than commenting on our intelligence. Today I believe that had she helped us connect geometry to something fun – say, like turkey hunting – I would have grasped the principles much more quickly. Last spring, when I killed a big tom at the intersection of a woods road and the field I was hunting, I realized I actually use geometry daily while hunting turkeys.
