Rare native brook trout the subject of ongoing study in Ohio

Division of Wildlife researchers are keeping a close eye on native brook trout in northeast Ohio with a plan moving forward to preserve this rare species in the state. Native brook trout have a place in Ohio’s fisheries history, though you’d be hard-pressed to find a brook trout in Ohio today.
According to the ODNR Division of Wildlife, brook trout were historically documented at the edge of their distribution in Ashtabula and Geauga counties. Noted Ohio fisheries researcher Milton Trautman wrote in 1981 that the headwaters of the Chagrin River historically appeared to contain suitable brook trout habitat. But, by 1945 that habitat had been destroyed.
