Ohio’s youth seasons ‘good opportunity’ for young hunters

Ohio’s youth hunting seasons are a good opportunity to get young hunters introduced to the sport. When it comes down to deer management, however, the number of deer that youths harvest is statistically insignificant, according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife. (Photo by Rob Drieslein)

Last deer season was a banner campaign for young Ohio whitetail hunters.
“Last (youth deer season) was an exceptional year,” said Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer project administrator. “We were up over 31% for just over 10,000 deer killed during that two-day youth season. That was quite the jump because it was 31% higher than the three-year average.”
