The latest attempt to create a Wisconsin sandhill crane season began Aug. 1 in Horicon at the inaugural meeting of the 2024 Legislative Council Study Committee on Sandhill Cranes.
One takeaway – a regulated hunt will not endanger the state’s sandhill crane population. Nor may a hunt reduce spring corn crop damage by cranes. Federal restrictions only allow a fall hunt. A fall hunt may help potato farmers discourage cranes from damaging crops.
