Mayflies have a large effect on Lake Erie fishing

Of all of the aquatic insects found in Lake Erie, perhaps none have the overall impact that the burrowing mayfly does on coastal towns, fishing techniques, and the food chain. (Stock photo)

Each spring and summer, those living or visiting the Lake Erie shoreline deal with a large number of annoying “bugs.” Their nymph or larval stages are produced in staggering numbers in the fertile lake sediments before emerging to reproduce while above the surface.
Of all of the aquatic insects found in Lake Erie, perhaps none have the overall impact that the burrowing mayfly does on coastal towns, fishing techniques, and the food chain.
