Another View: Time to reimagine firearms safety programs

I grew up in Brainerd, Minn., in the 1980s, counting down the days until I earned my firearms safety certification, a rite of passage for kids like me. I can still hear the crack of the single-shot Stevens .22 during our field day test.
Minnesota held its first firearms safety class in 1955, created in response to hunting-related fatalities and injuries. In 1990, the legislature mandated that anyone born after December 31, 1979 complete the course before buying a hunting license. The program has been a great success, driving a dramatic reduction in hunting accidents.

Pro Hunting Tip of the Week: Finding the right habitat key for early grouse

Here in Ely, Minn., we’re fortunate to have thousands of acres of public land and great ruffed grouse habitat right outside our door. In 2024, I started the Grouse Lodge at Boundary Waters Outfitters, located on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Minnesota DNR prepares ELS for big pulse of license buyers ahead of gun hunt

The Minnesota DNR is preparing for the firearms deer season to ensure the updated Electronic Licensing System can handle the big throng of license-buyers.
This past August, the system had problems when issuing surplus bear tags that left many frustrated with the process. Jamie Gangaware, operations manager and ELS executive, said the DNR had instituted a new process this year.

Mixed conditions, but more ducks greet Minnesota’s opener this Saturday

The traditional Minnesota duck season opens 30 minutes before sunrise this Saturday, Sept. 26, and Jerry Christopherson, of Heron Lake in southwest Minnesota, will be in the marsh, boom stick in tow.
Christopherson, 83, who has hunted the celebrated waterfowling lake since he was a boy, is a member of Duck Inn, a longtime North Heron Lake duck club – a club that, just two years ago, was completely flooded out in the spring, then gutted and more or less refurbished by the opener. “I haven’t missed too many openers over the decades,” said Christopherson.

Fall is the perfect time to catch Lake Erie’s giant walleyes; here’s what to focus on

Anglers who are prepared to face some colder weather can catch lunker walleyes. For the past decade, walleye fishing derbies on Lake Erie have shown that big fish can be caught late in the season when they are closer to shore, fattening up for the winter.
Looking at the winners of the Walleye Fall Brawl over the past 12 years definitely shows a clear pattern. The derby starts in the middle of October and is held in the U.S. waters of Lake Erie. However, the winning fish during the past 12 years have all been caught in November with 11 of the 12 being caught late in the month.

Upper Peninsula landowner provides evidence feral pigs have established there

A population of feral pigs that escaped from a game farm have become established in southern Marquette County, based on game camera photos Andy Wright captured on his property.
That’s bad news for upland bird and deer hunters in the UP because hogs have a reputation for eating anything, including eggs of ground nesting birds such as turkeys, grouse and woodcock and fawns.

Big waterfront project in Lorain, Ohio, to benefit anglers

When the Hot Waters Boat Launch reopened in the City of Lorain on May 22, it was just one milestone in the city’s waterfront development plans, which are hoped to ultimately benefit anglers and families.
The Waterfront Redevelopment Project, which surrounds the launch ramps, is on 50 acres that was previously shipbuilding, steel, and manufacturing sites at the confluence of the Black River and Lake Erie in downtown Lorain.
