I grew up in Brainerd, Minn., in the 1980s, counting down the days until I earned my firearms safety certification, a rite of passage for kids like me. I can still hear the crack of the single-shot Stevens .22 during our field day test.
Minnesota held its first firearms safety class in 1955, created in response to hunting-related fatalities and injuries. In 1990, the legislature mandated that anyone born after December 31, 1979 complete the course before buying a hunting license. The program has been a great success, driving a dramatic reduction in hunting accidents.

Whitefish and the old ways: Maintaining a North Country tradition in Minnesota

Lake whitefish are a species of salmonid found in the cold waters of northern Minnesota, and across the upper Great Lakes region. I grew up spearing this cold-water species through the ice in early winter. But I had never targeted this fish in open water.
That changed this last week as I boated into in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to participate in the fall whitefish sport-netting season.
