Wednesday, Sept. 23 marks Travel Management Rule comment deadline

Managing travel and access is one of conservation’s trickiest topics.
Ask most hunters whether they’d rather drive right to a downed elk and load it into a pickup or carry it over miles of blowdown, and the answer is most likely: Load it up. And would you rather hike or pedal that 1,000-foot climb, or use a pedal-assisted e-bike? Working smarter, not harder, is often attractive. But it’s easy to forget that what’s good for us individually is not always what’s best for hunting as a whole – or for the wildlife and wild places we hold dear.

Michigan DNR clarifies rule changes in effect for trout, salmon, sturgeon

Michigan anglers have some additional fishing regulations to keep in mind this fall after the DNR clarified several changes that were not reflected in the printed 2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations guide.
On Sept. 9, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved updates to Fisheries Orders 254 and 205. The changes took effect Sept. 10. The revisions address trout and salmon regulations on inland waters and lake sturgeon regulations on Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters.

Ralph Loos: Michigan’s reliable hunting traditions got an update (upgrade?) this season

More than any other collection of like-minded individuals, hunters tend to get stuck in their ways — and I say that as a hunter who tends to get stuck in his ways.
There’s comfort in tradition, doing things the way they’ve always been done. The same shotgun is pulled from the gun cabinet first each year, and the same roads are taken to the woods. The same trail to the deer stand is walked. We even have favorite places to sit – and favorite places to mull bad judgments we’ve made.

USFWS announces new duck season framework process

The Department of the Interior recently announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is finalizing a streamlined process for authorizing seasonal migratory game bird hunting, reducing unnecessary federal rulemaking while providing greater predictability for states, tribes, and hunters.
Under the new process, the USFWS will establish federal hunting season conditions through Migratory Game Bird Hunting memoranda rather than conducting annual federal rulemaking.
