Examining a summer ‘defined by fire’ in the Boundary Waters

We knew the fires were there. We just couldn’t smell them.
For two days, working east and south of Ely, Minnesota, our team was aware of the danger, but it felt more abstract than immediate. We were near the canoe country fires, but not close enough to feel directly threatened. Then on day three, the wind shifted.

Steve Piatt: Planning – and shooting – for success this hunting season

It happens every year, usually when the calendar turns to August. I suddenly realize I haven’t done nearly enough fishing this summer; that both the dogs and I need to get in shape for the hunting season; and it’s time to shoot something – rifle, crossbow, shotgun – as often as possible over the next couple months.
Summer tends to blitz its way into fall around here, and while this year did, in fact, involve some Lake Erie walleye, Lake Ontario salmon, and plenty of camping, I’m embarrassed to say that we haven’t hit the Susquehanna River for smallmouth even though it’s a half-mile away.

The September shift: What happens in a buck’s life when he goes from velvet to hard antlered?

Back in turkey season, bucks started to show the first signs of antler growth. As the summer progressed, their future racks began to take shape.
Now, we are in the time period when they’ll reveal their finished products. This whole process is one of nature’s coolest, but what happens now is more than just the last chapter of a unique biological feat. It’s a time of change for bucks, and hunters should pay attention.

Partnerships help preserve public lands, habitat for Minnesota’s prairie chickens

Minnesota Pheasants Forever and the Minnesota Prairie Chicken Society have been working in partnership to restore lands in the state’s primary prairie chicken range for nearly a decade.
Sabin Adams, Minnesota state coordinator with Pheasants Forever, said efforts began in 2017. Through the partnership, he said, they have acquired lands suitable for prairie chicken habitat and worked to restore the native prairie grouse.

Jeremiah Haas: Dare to be different to find success in the woods and on the water

Hunting and fishing are always full of new innovations.
One person might say it is to conquer the game or fish we chase. Others may say it is to conquer the hunter’s and fisherman’s wallet. Either way, outdoorsmen should consider their own ideas occasionally and not just follow the crowd.

Poaching suspect a no-show for court appearances in two Wisconsin counties

Two circuit court judges recently ordered arrest warrants for a Shawano County, Wis., man after he failed to show up for court appearances on nine poaching-related charges.
Dylan J. Wolff, 27, of Pulcifer, faces several felony and misdemeanor charges in connection with alleged poaching incidents in Waupaca and Forest counties. He is also accused of several poaching violations in Oconto and Brown counties, but no poaching-related charges had been filed against him in either of those counties as of Aug. 18.
