Examining a summer ‘defined by fire’ in the Boundary Waters

Burning for nearly two months across federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the active Thumb Fire spans 25,000-plus acres in St. Louis County in northeast Minnesota.

We knew the fires were there. We just couldn’t smell them.
For two days, working east and south of Ely, Minnesota, our team was aware of the danger, but it felt more abstract than immediate. We were near the canoe country fires, but not close enough to feel directly threatened. Then on day three, the wind shifted.
