The geese are getting smarter; here’s a few tricks to outwit them

I’m an avid golfer, but I believe that we should shut down all the golf courses in the upper tier of the country when the goose season opens so we can put out some big decoy spreads on the fairways and hunt these big birds.
These giant waterfowl have become conditioned to feeding on the finely manicured grass and don’t seem to fear humans there, even when those club swingers are buzzing from hole-to-hole in golf carts. It’s not the same anymore in the field.

High ground, steady wind, close-range bucks: Tips for hunting whitetails in hill country

Hunting rutting whitetails can be exciting because otherwise-slow days can turn into dynamic action in seconds when a hot doe courses through your hunting area.
While there are so many things that can go awry when a buck finally presents a shot, stand placement relative to wind direction should not be one of them. If you frequent hill or bluff country, or even mountain terrain, discerning sometimes-fickle wind patterns is key to tagging deer.

Fur market report: Generally positive outlook a welcomed change for eager trappers

The wild fur market is going into the 2026-27 trapping season with a lot to be thankful for. It’ll certainly be a good year to trap bobcats, otter, red fox and mink. But if you trap mostly staple Midwestern fur, such as muskrat, coyote, or raccoon? Maybe not so much.
As has been the case for a while, the majority of buyers at the FHA have been Chinese – or at least brokering for the Chinese. Over the past few years, more and more millennials in China have reached a stage in life where their buying power is coming into serious play.

Mike Raykovicz: Winter prep happens long before the snow arrives

Here we go again. Winter is several months away but I feel the need to be prepared for the cold weather that’s certain to come in New York. It’s early September, and it’s hot, but there was wood to be cut, hauled out of the woods, transported, unloaded, and stacked.
I have other things to do before winter gets here. For me, September means setting trail cameras, clearing brush, scouting potential food sources, and at least one trip down south to take in one of my grandson’s college football games. August walks, September flies.

Scout more, haul less for opening-day ducks

Opening-day duck hunting has little in common with mid- to late-season duck hunting for a number of reasons. Thus, preparing for a duck opener means setting aside many of the concerns hunters face later in the waterfowl season and focusing on the fundamentals that will bring ducks to bag.
Here are some simple suggestions to consider when planning an opening day strategy.
