Commentary: If you consider the work, Michigan’s most valuable insect is… the mayfly

Mention Michigan’s wildlife, and most people picture white-tailed deer, brook trout, loons, or perhaps the monarch butterfly. Few would nominate an insect as the state’s most valuable animal. Yet if one insect vanished from Michigan, the consequences would ripple through lakes, rivers, forests, and even our economy.
My vote goes to the mayfly.

Ralph Loos: So many rule changes for Michigan deer hunters, so many different ways to confuse them

We can all imagine what conversations between hunters and COs will sound like this season, especially if a hunter follows his or her habits instead of his or her aforementioned shiny new rulebook – or, more likely I guess, shiny new smartphone app..

Gretchen Steele: When the regulations become a hunt of their own

There was a time when preparing for hunting season in Illinois meant finding a place to hunt, checking the weather, sighting in the gun or bow, and maybe negotiating with a dog that had discovered a fresh mud puddle. These days, another item belongs on the checklist: figuring out which rules actually apply.
That may sound simple, but Illinois outdoorspeople know better. A hunter, angler, or trapper can start with the annual digest, move to an IDNR webpage, follow a link to the Illinois Administrative Code, and then discover that a site-specific rule changes the answer again.

Southwest Ohio’s Eastwood Lake offers decent bass fishing

Anglers in the Dayton area enjoy a variety of fishing opportunities within the Five Rivers Metroparks system.
One of those offerings is Eastwood Lake, an 185-acre, mile long impoundment that was created as a byproduct of gravel mining operations. The lake was completed in 1972 with two goals in mind: to provide water recreation opportunities for the community and to protect the public water supply.

Nearly 360 new acres preserved in Ohio’s Jackson County

The Ohio DNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves (DNAP) acquired nearly 360 acres of property in Jackson County, creating lasting protection for one of the highest concentrations of rare plants in southeastern Ohio. The acquisition adds 193 acres to Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve and creates the new White’s Gulch State Nature Preserves, 164 acres.

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) recently celebrated and honored 13 recipients for their achievements in conservation and protection of Ohio’s natural resources with a special ceremony at the Ohio State Fair.
The department inducted six people into the Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame and awarded seven others with the Cardinal Award during a special ceremony in the Natural Resources Park at the Ohio State Fair.

Steve Pollick: ‘Perch hunting’ tough business, but worth it on Lake Erie

It was a promising mid-August morning, weather-wise, on western Lake Erie and fishing buddy Steve Hathaway and I decided go perch hunting.
Yes, perch “hunting,” not fishing. That was because despite ideal moderate weather and a perfect 10 mph southwest breeze churning up easy one-footers, the fabled yellow perch were hiding. It seemed clear as we cleared the Portage River channel at Port Clinton, Ohio, that a pack of boats had decided that the fishing was “on” outside of the northeast corner of the “Picket Fence.”
