Labs, the most popular bird dog in America, have an interesting past

The Labrador retriever is as expected a sight in a duck boat as a bag of decoys would be. Their place in the waterfowl world, as well as the upland world, is pretty much unrivaled.
They generally find their way into more human-assistance roles than any other breed out there. Anyone who has owned a Labrador knows why this is. But they may not know the breed’s whole history, which is pretty incredible.

Michigan’s wolves on camera – numbers tell quite a story

Michigan’s wolves are proving to be a lot harder to count than they are to photograph. A new network of more than 1,300 remote cameras across the Upper Peninsula is giving researchers their first year-round look at the state’s wolf population – and revealing just how dramatically those numbers can change with the seasons.
Michigan DNR’s Andy Henion recently reported on the effort, offering a look at how Michigan State University researchers and the Michigan DNR deployed the cameras throughout the Upper Peninsula as part of a project designed to complement the state’s traditional winter wolf track surveys.

Golden-year milestone for Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands Trail

Should you find yourself on Route 219 near Johnstown, Cambria County, headed south near the Windber exit, take a glance westward (right) from the highway. That soaring escarpment is the Great Laurel Ridge, a defining feature of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands region.
