New group forms to put an end to stocking over wild fish in Pennsylvania

James Neely has no problem with stocked trout. He just doesn’t want them in wild trout streams.
A lifelong outdoorsman who lives in McKean County, Neely said it’s time for Pennsylvania to rethink its hatchery culture and let self-sustaining salmonids thrive. Now 70, he recently launched the Pennsylvania Wild Trout Coalition to gain support for his mission.
“I want the great white fleet off our wild trout streams,” he said. “Let nature raise the fish.”

Two Pennsylvania state parks join National Old-Growth Forest Network

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in late July celebrated the addition of two forest tracts in Potter and Schuylkill counties into the national Old-Growth Forest Network: Ole Bull State Park in Potter County and the Tuscarora State Park in Schuylkill County.
“Pennsylvania is the national leader in designated old-growth forests because of the commonwealth’s legacy of conservation, environmental stewardship, and continued focus on protecting these special places,” said DCNR Deputy Secretary John Norbeck.

Popular in western states, float tube fishing is primed to take hold in the Midwest

Walk into almost any tackle shop out west – in California, Oregon, Colorado, or Utah – and you’ll find float tubes hanging on the wall.
Talk to anglers who chase bass or trout in those states, and many will have owned one at some point. In the western United States, float tubes are simply another tool – a practical, affordable way to reach fish that shore anglers can’t touch. Here in the Midwest, however, the story changes.

Focus on a few fundamental truths for a better bowhunting season

I got a text from a friend who has been putting many hours in scouting for whitetails this year.
He was seeing good sign on a big piece of public land – scrapes, rubs, and great trail systems indicating many deer are using the property. At the end of the day, he found himself with plenty of information but no real plan on exactly how to hunt the sign he was finding. My buddy is in his early 20s and what he’s going through gave me flashbacks to what I went through at that age.

Pennsylvania’s CWD pilot program may give hunters an option

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is ramping up a pilot program with the eventual goal to afford hunters across the state the opportunity to test their own deer for chronic wasting disease.
The program is an alternative to the head-collection bins that hunters in certain areas can use to have their deer tested.

Junior Hunter Gun, a new hunter training tool, inches closer to reality

A first-time hunter takes aim at a pheasant rising from the cornfield.

He unlocks the safety, presses his cheek against the butt of the gun and smoothly squeezes the trigger.
The sound of a shotgun blast rings in his ears, but no pellets are propelled skyward. Instead, a camera affixed to the barrel of the gun captures the performance of the young hunter and flashes a photo on a built-in video screen. A quick glance lets the youngster know if he hit or missed the target. This futuristic scene has been playing in Conner Couet’s head for months, but very soon his entrepreneurial spirit will help turn an idea into reality.
