Things always slow down in late July, and the bite for most species gets a bit tougher. As I wrote about last week, I have been spending time in Minnesota’s Becker County looking for new lakes and finding some success.

Superior National Forest officials are monitoring and evaluating Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness permits daily, and clarified the status of the wilderness closure on Wednesday.
Tom Hall, deputy U.S. Forest Service supervisor, reiterated that permits for the BWCAW – as announced last weekend – remain canceled through Friday, July 24. Earlier Wednesday morning in a press release, the agency said the closure order was scheduled to remain in place through Oct. 1. Later in the day, the agency clarified in a second release that the Oct. 1 closure could be rescinded any time.
Lake Andrusia is a prolific link in the popular Cass Lake Chain of Lakes in Beltrami County. It’s an excellent multi-species fishery, with a long history of strong walleye production, while panfish, northern pike, and muskies provide excellent secondary angling options.

Officials with the Minnesota Incident Command System provided an update this week on the wildfires burning in northern Minnesota and ongoing suppression efforts. As of Tuesday, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area remained closed through Friday, July 24. The U.S. Forest Service first closed the BWCA on July 14.
Lenore Lamb, public information officer for the southern area complex incident management team, said the BWCAW is being evaluated and monitored daily to see if extensions on the cancellation are necessary.

Bear hunters who entered the lottery for bear hunting licenses should check their mail to see if they were selected for a license. The Minnesota DNR began sending postcards to lottery winners during the first week of June.
